Annual reports released by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) showed that the majority of students are from rural areas.

Students from poor provinces are among the 100 top scorers, many of them are from families with very difficult living conditions. Very few students in big cities have been found on the list of the most excellent students.

The student, who topped the list of 100 students who got the highest marks at the 2012 university entrance exams (those, who got 28.25/30 marks at least), was Nguyen Kim Phuong from Lam Dong Province. With 30/30 marks, Phuong passed the exam to the HCM City Medical and Pharmaceutical University.

The second position in the list belonged to a student from the former Ha Tay Province, now a part of Hanoi – Tran Xuan Bach – who got 29.75 marks on the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University.

In 2013, Nguyen Trong Hung, a student from Nam Khoai Chau High School in Hung Yen Province, was the top scorer for entrance to Hanoi Foreign Trade University and one of the two top scorers in the country, with 29.5 marks.

In the latest 2014 university entrance exam, three students who got 29.25 marks were he country’s top scorers and all of them are from provinces.

Le Ba Tung, who came first to the Hanoi Medical University, was a student at Quang Xuong 1 High School in Thanh Hoa Province.

Pham Duc Toan, the top scorer of the Hanoi Foreign Trade University is from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An Province.

Meanwhile, the top scorer of the HCM City Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Tong Huu Nhan, is a student from Vinh Long Province.

Of the 11 students who placed first and second at the university entrance exams from 2008 to now, nine are from the provinces of Quang Ngai, Tra Vinh, Dong Nai and Tay Ninh.

Of the eight students who placed first and second at the exam to the HCM City Law & Economics University, seven are from Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Binh Phuoc and Dong Nai provinces.

The HCM City University of Technology has welcomed 16 top scorers to the school since 2007, who got 28.5-30 marks on the entrance exams. Of these, 13 come from small districts of provinces.

The 2014 top scorer of the school, who got 28.5 marks, is Tran Van Cuong from Duc Tho District of Ha Tinh province. The student from a family with very difficult living conditions is also the second biggest scorer of Hanoi Medical University with 29 marks.

A psychologist noted that students from poor families are usually the most energetic people, who believe that they have to study well to help themselves and the families escape from poverty. With their iron will and eagerness for learning, the students can overcome difficulties to obtain high learning achievements.
