Top goalkeeper suddenly loses hearing

National goalkeeper Duong Hong Son yesterday was sent to hospital due to sudden hearing loss.

Team doctor Tran Anh Tuan said there were different reasons causing his deafness. "We are waiting for the final decision of the hospital doctors so we don't know when he will be okay. However he will need at least 10 days for treatment so he might not join Viet Nam at the Qatar's training course starting next week," Tuan said.

Son was training with the national team in Ha Noi in preparation for the third round match of the 2015 Asian Cup against Uzbekistan.

Apart from Son the national team have two other goalies Nguyen Thanh Binh and Tran Buu Ngoc.

Student football tourney starts Sunday

A football tournament for high school students will kick off tomorrow in Ha Noi with the participation of 47 teams.

Teams are divided into 12 groups who will play in a round-robin format. The strongest squad from each group, and four second-placed teams who have the best results, will advance to the next round.

Last year Lomonosov High School took the champion title.

Four new faces for national team

National team interim coach Nguyen Van Sy has called up four new faces for upcoming matches at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualification.

They include two players from the U23 team, goalkeeper Tran Buu Ngoc and in-form striker Le Van Thang. Ngoc will increase safety in front of the goal and Thang is good on the attack.

Defender Nguyen Xuan Thanh and midfielder Hoang Van Binh were previously added to replace Pham Nguyen Sa, Le Tan Tai and Tran Van Phong, who are injured.

The team is practising at the youth training centre in Ha Noi. Viet Nam is drawn in the group featuring Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.

Vietnam victorious over Hong Kong at U19 Asian football tourney

The Vietnamese squad defeated its Hong Kong (China) rivals 5-1 at the second match in group F of the U19 Asian football tournament’s qualifying round in Malaysia on October 5.

Three goals were scored in the first set thanks to Cong Phuong, Van Toan and Thanh Tung in the 10th, 34th and 44th.

The Vietnamese U19 team held their position in the second set. In the 61st, Van Son raised the scored to 4-0.

Seven minutes later, the score rose to 5-0 thanks to a successful goal of Cong Phuong, it was also the fifth goal of Phuong at this Asian tourney.

However, two minutes later, U19 Hong Kong secured their first point to narrow the score to 5-1 after great efforts from Tsang Tsx Hin.

The U19 Vietnam team now has six points and it will face Australia in the next match.

Vietnam 1 draws with Indonesia at ASEAN U13 Football Cup

The U13 Viettel team (Vietnam 1) drew with U13 Red Garuda (Indonesia) 2-2 in the second match of the Yamaha ASEAN Under-13 Football Cup in Hanoi on October 5.

Vietnam 1 currently ranks second in group A and they now face their next rivals the U13 Thailand team in the semi-final.

In group B, Thailand continued to show its strength after defeating White Garuda (Indonesia) 3-0.

In the same group B, U13 Song Lam Nghe An (Vietnam 2) lost 0-2 before White Garuda (Indonesia) and were therefore knocked out of the tournament.

Vietnamese culture shines in Australia

The Australian capital city of Canberra hosted its 2013 Vietnamese Cultural Festival on October 4.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Hoang Vinh Thanh, hundreds of expatriate Vietnamese students and postgraduates, and numerous international friends gathered to celebrate Vietnamese identity and tradition.

Stalls were arranged to mimic a typical rural market and showcased Vietnamese arts, handicrafts, and cuisine. Vietnamese students exhibited traditional fashion and performed dances.  

The organisng board, a combination of the Canberra Vietnamese Student Association and the Australian National University Vietnamese Student Association, noted this year’s festival raised funds for victims of the recent floods affecting Vietnam’s central region.

FIFA grants US$20,000 to Vietnam’s Football For All

The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) has allocated US$20,000 in funding to Thua Thien-Hue province’s “Football for All in Vietnam” (FFAV) initiative.

The financing will be used to expand the 2014 football programmes organised for social support centres’ youth at risk.

The project’s activities include a football popularisation movement, a fun football festival, and a football school.

Deputy FFAV in Thua Thien-Hue Director Nguyen Hoang Phuong said the initiative is also designed to incorporate life skill learning spanning traffic safety, unexploded ordnance risk prevention, communication, and environmental consciousness.

FFAV began in Thua Thien-Hue in 2003. It has so far established one hundred and forty five football clubs involving 14,000 young participants.

Viettel defeats Malaysia at ASEAN U13 Football Cup

The U13 Viettel team (Vietnam 1) has beaten U13 Malaysia 3-2 in the opening match of the Yamaha ASEAN Under-13 Football Cup in Hanoi on October 4.

The hosts only needed 20 minutes to open the scoring courtesy of a strike from Tran Danh Trung. Nguyen Huu Thang’s follow-up five minutes later extended the lead to 2-0.

Malaysia drew equal during the second half with goals from Aliff Haiqal and Wan Ar san.

But in the final minute of the match, Bui Minh Duc’s score sealed the victory for the Vietnamese team.

Vietnam 1 team will now face Indonesia in the afternoon of October 5.

In group B, Vietnam 2—the U13 Song Lam Nghe An team—lost their October 4 match against Thailand 0-2.
