Thousands of villagers and interested onlookers enjoyed a wrestling festival which took place in Sinh village in Phu Mau commune of Phu Vang district, located in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue Province on February 14.
The annual festival began early in the morning on the 10th day of the Lunar New Year. The festival dates back over 400 years, the competition was originally started to strengthen solidarity among local people and to develop cultural traditions through multiple generations. Some of the village's older residents sat in a communal house, keeping a close eye on the competition. Before beginning the competition, the wrestlers must bow before the village’s older residents. The festival frequently draws a large crowd, including both local people and villagers. Throughout the event the young wrestlers show their competitive spirit. The strong skills of the wrestlers are on display during the competition. The event takes place amid a large sand ground. Wrestlers are made up of people from Phu Vang district and neighbouring Quang Dien district. |
Traditionally the event’s strongest wrestlers are honoured whilst all those competing show both courage and confidence. |
