Vietnam National University Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-Ho Chi Minh City).

The 2021 THE rankings has expanded to 606 schools from 48 countries. VNU-Hanoi is placed among the world’s leading 251 to 300 institutions, while HUST was ranked between 351 and 400, with VNU-Ho Chi Minh City named between the top 401 and 500 educational establishments.

Among representatives from Vietnam, VNU-Hanoi ranked first in most of the indexes. Compared to last year rankings, this university moved up by 8.8% for research criteria, followed by scientific citations up by 8%. For the remaining three criteria (teaching, knowledge transfers and internationalization), it had a slight increase.

In the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021, China has up to 91 ranked universities, including familiar names such as Tsinghua University, Beijing University and Zhejiang University.

It ws followed by Russia with 48 higher education institutions, Taiwan with 38 higher education institutions and South Africa with 11 higher education institutions.

Top universities of some countries in Southeast Asia were ranked highly, such as University of Malaya (Malaysia) – 31st, Mahidol University (Thailand) – 80th; University of Indonesia (Indonesia) - 116th; University of the Philippines (Philippines) – 83rd.

The rankings make use of the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings in order to judge institutions based on a variety of factors, including their teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. Despite this, they have different methods of calculating them in order to reflect the development priorities of universities located in emerging economies.

In total, 606 universities make up the rankings this year, up from 533 in 2020. Forty-eight territories are represented, one more than was recorded in last year’s list.
