Local authorities said that the fire occurred at about 12am on November 30 at an old house of nearly 100sq.m, which is a waste warehouse of Mr. Phan Hong Phong, 38, and Mrs. Pham Ngoc Diem, along Highway 91C.
When the fire broke out, neighbors tried to break the iron door but they failed since it was locked inside. Local people used pumping machines of the households around the waste warehouse to take water from a creek of the Tien River, nearly 100m from the waste house. They failed to put out the fire.
"Water from pumping machines could not extinguish the fire because it was too big since the waste warehouse contained flammable materials,” a neighbor named Huy said.
More than half an hour later, professional fire trucks from Chau Doc City traveled 35 km to the scene to put out the fire. The burned bodies of the couple and their 10-year-old daughter were found in the next morning.
The couple’s relatives said Diem was 5-months pregnant.
The police are investigating the cause of the fire.
