The victims are 57-year-old Mua Thi Song, 25-year-old Thao Thi Vi – Song’s daughter-in-law and 4-month-old Ly A Suoi – Vi’s son.

At 3pm on Sunday, Song and Vi were working on a paddy field and using an umbrella to cover three of them from the heavy rains when they were struck, according to Nguyen Thanh Hung, head of the district department of agriculture and rural development.

Local authorities provide support for the family with the burial in line with local traditions and gave them VND30 million (US$1,849), Vietnam News Agency reported.

Previously, on August 9, in the rural commune of Phu Linh, Vi Xuyen District of the northern province Ha Giang, two sisters were also dead as they took cover in a hut during a thunderstorm. The same day, in Meo Vac District, a three-year-old H'Mông child also fell victim to lightning while his grandmother and his younger sister sustained serious injuries.
