VietNamNet Bridge - Dinh Rau, the village patriarch of Phong Nha – Ke Bang Forests, is respected by all A Rem people for his deep understanding about the folk remedies which can help cure serious diseases. 

A Rem is a small ethnic group of more than 50 households and 300 people living in Tan Trach commune in Quang Binh province. A Rem left the caves for settlement around 40 years ago. In their community, Dinh Rau, 70, is the person whose prestige and talent has extended beyond the jungle. 

The patriarch is small but fast and strong like a wild animal in the high mountains and thick forest. The man is compared to a ‘living book’ as he has deep knowledge about the culture, traditions and habits of A Rem.

Nguyen Chi Sy, secretary of the Party Committee of Tan Trach Commune, said that Dinh Rau is an ‘almighty’ man who preserves the esoteric healing methods of A Rem.

“He knows thousands of precious herbs available in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang forests. He has mastered the original bone healing method,” he said.

Every time a patient is brought to him, he organizes a ceremony to offer simple products to the Heaven, the Mountain and Forest Gods in accordance with A Rem’s customs.

After that, he bakes a knife in a charcoal stove fire. When the knife gets red, he lifts it from the stove and holds it in his mouth for a while. He then releases the knife and blows the hot air into the painful area on the patient, while his hands rub over the wounds.  He repeats this three times until the patients recovers.

“I have been living and working in Tan Trach for the last 10 years and I witnessed tens of people cured by Dinh Rau with such a method,” he said. “Many people cured by Dinh Rau are still alive.”

Y Mao, an A Rem girl, was one of the patients cured by Dinh Rau. She broke her leg when climbing a tree. The wound became serious as her parents could not arrange money to take her to the hospital. The village patriarch heard about the girl and cured her.

In October 2013, when a typhoon hit the locality, it caused serious wounds to two men. Trees fell on Dinh C’Rai’s head, causing serious blooding and breaking one limb. Everyone thought he would not last. However, the man was brought back to life by Dinh Rau.
