According to data from Box Office Vietnam, as of the morning of April 8, The Tunnel surpassed VND 81 billion, becoming one of the highest-grossing historical war films of all time in Vietnam.
In recent days, director Bui Thac Chuyen’s wartime film has become a hot topic across the media and online forums. Images and clips from the movie have gone viral, and praise from critics and early viewers has helped The Tunnel dominate the box office with packed screening slots.
Despite being suspended from theaters on April 4 and 5 due to cinema closures, The Tunnel still managed to earn VND 45 billion (USD 1.8 million) from early showings, pre-sold tickets, and strong Sunday box office figures on April 6. Nearly half a million tickets were sold across about 12,000 screenings.
Including revenue from the Hung Kings' holiday on April 7 and additional pre-sale figures, the film has now totaled VND 81 billion (USD 3.25 million). With its current momentum, the film is expected to hit the VND 100 billion (USD 4 million) mark in the coming days, likely setting new records for the Vietnamese war film genre by this weekend.
The massive draw of The Tunnel pushed last week’s box office leader, the horror film Yin-Yang Road, down to fourth place with under VND 5.7 billion (USD 228,000) in earnings. The second and third positions were taken by two Hollywood films: Minecraft: The Movie (VND 7.7 billion or USD 308,000) and The Mason Agent (VND 5.6 billion or USD 224,000). While Minecraft, starring Jason Momoa, opened to an impressive USD 146.3 million globally, it still couldn't withstand the box office storm caused by The Tunnel in Vietnam.
