VietNamNet Bridge - Educators have rung the alarm bell over the number of students forced to stop studying at school, saying that students lack enthusiasm, regularly play truant and receive bad marks.

The Hanoi University of Science & Technology said 700-800 students are forced to stop studying every year because they don’t fulfill exercises and exams and cannot meet requirements set by the school.

The information stunned the public. Only students who have very high scores at the national exam can enroll in the university.

A senior officer of the school’s training division said that the students are ‘too absorbed’ in play’ and don’t spend appropriate time on learning, not because the subjects are too difficult. 

“Students think if they pass the exam to school, they will automatically be able to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Therefore, they don’t make efforts in study,” he said.

The HCM City Law University has made public the list of more than 200 full-time students who bear discipline because of poor learning records. This is also a school which sets high requirements on input students.

Of these, 66 students have been reprimanded as their GPA (grade point average) in the second semester of the 2016-2017 academic year was lower than one-fourth, while 112 students were forced to leave school, commencing from the first semester of the 2017-2018 academic year as they have received warnings about bad marks twice.

Meanwhile, the HCM City University of Agriculture and Forestry released a decision on suspending 15 students for one year because they cheated on the English exam.

Nguyen Tung Lam, a renowned educator, commented that many university students think the time at university is the time to play. They had to learn too hard to attend the entrance exam, so they ‘relax’ after successfully enrolling in universities.

Meanwhile, Pham Manh Ha from the Vietnam Youth Academy, commented that many students were tired of study because they chose the wrong training majors to follow.

“Many students cannot choose schools and training majors which fit their passions and abilities,” he commented. 

Agreeing with Ha, a university lecturer in Hanoi said many students don’t know why they enroll in these universities, but not others. 

“They just want to have a bachelor’s degree and don’t care what they study,” he commented.
