Stretching over 36km from Binh Khanh ferry terminal in Nha Be District to Long Hoa Commune in Can Gio District, Rung Sac Road is one of the most picturesque routes in the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.

This scenic drive leads to the iconic Rung Sac guerrilla base and the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve – a popular destination during the April 30 – May 1 holiday.

Wide, green, and serene, the 36.5km-long, 30m-wide Rung Sac Road features six traffic lanes and eight bridges crossing mangrove-lined rivers. Lush greenery and thick mangrove forests on either side create a tranquil scene straight out of a painting.

Recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, Can Gio’s mangrove forests offer more than natural beauty – they are also steeped in history. One of the top attractions is the Rung Sac guerrilla base, located in Long Hoa Commune.

This site once served as a strategic command post during the resistance against American forces, with the elite 10th Special Forces Regiment relying on the dense forest cover and support from surrounding communities.

Today, visitors can stroll beneath the shade of the old mangrove trees, learn about the region’s revolutionary past, and immerse themselves in stories of heroism and sacrifice.

Huy and Loc, tourists from Hoc Mon District, said they appreciated the opportunity to connect with both nature and history.

To explore the area further, many choose to travel by motorized canoe – a time-saving and thrilling way to experience the region's waterway culture.

Reconstructed within the mangrove forest, the Rung Sac base features lifelike displays of special forces soldiers in action. The site also preserves numerous artifacts and images commemorating the hardships and bravery of wartime fighters.

Just a short distance away is Can Gio’s famed Monkey Island, located within the biosphere reserve. Home to over 2,000 monkeys of various species, this natural habitat offers a fun and interactive experience with local wildlife.

Whether it’s wandering through the mangroves, discovering Vietnam’s resistance legacy, or bonding with friends and family amid nature, a journey down Rung Sac Road is sure to leave lasting memories.
