VietNamNet Bridge – The branch of Xuan Giang Primary School located on Hong Lam Island has only three classes with nine pupils.
Hong Lam village of Xuan Giang commune in Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh
province is commonly known as the oasis as it is separate from the
outside by the Lam River.
Surrounded by the river, the only means
of transport to go to the island is simple boats. Currently the village
has 200 households, mainly middle-aged and elderly people.
To
serve the needs of learning of children in Hong Lam village, Nghi Xuan
district authorities built a kindergarten and a primary school on the
island.
The branch of Xuan Giang Primary School was built over 10
years ago with eight classrooms. Previously, the school had about 15
students but now there are only nine children attending grade 1, 2 and
4.
The school has four teachers who cross the river to go to
school everyday. Sometimes the children are absent from school, or go to
the main school on the mainland, so the school has only three students
and a teacher.
From Monday to Friday, female teachers have to travel several kilometers, then cross the river to go to the oasis for teaching.
Teachers
prepare a pair of rubber boots and a pair of sandals. The rubber boots
are used on the boat and the sandals are used in class.
The class finishes at 10.30am.
