VietNamNet Bridge – Hundreds of cows and buffaloes in the famous tourist town of Sapa died when the temperature felt to nearly zero degree Celsius in the past few days. Many people sold beef and buffalo meat along the road.

The new cold spell made the temperature fall deeply in northern provinces. In Sapa, ice has appeared for nearly a week when the temperature was between 1 and 5 degrees C, affecting people's lives.

The Lao Cai Newspaper reported that hundreds of buffaloes and cows died in the cold in mountain districts, including Sa Pa, Bac Ha, Muong Khuong, Bat Xat and Si Ma Cai.

Locals sold meat of the dead cattle along the roads at low price.

Most recently, Lao Cai got losses worth more than VND35 billion ($1.2 million) in a cold spell in late December 2013. Sapa district alone lost nearly VND19 billion ($0.8 million) with over 130 dead cows and buffaloes and about 100 hectares of damaged crops.

The meteorological agency said that the temperature would increase gradually this week but in the northern mountainous provinces, the temperature will still below 10 degrees C.
