Nem rán (fried spring rolls), also known as chả giò in southern Vietnam, is the only Vietnamese dish to make it onto Taste Atlas’s recently published list of the 100 best fried dishes in the world, ranking 42nd with a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.

A global favorite

Taste Atlas, a renowned global culinary guide, described nem rán as a dish made from finely minced pork and shrimp wrapped in soft rice paper.

Once fried, the rolls achieve a golden, crispy exterior, while the filling delights with its flavorful mix of pork, shrimp, glass noodles, wood ear mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and various herbs.

The dish’s appeal lies in its rich combination of textures and flavors, making it a staple on Vietnamese dining tables and a favorite among food enthusiasts worldwide.

This is not the first time Vietnamese fried spring rolls have been honored on global platforms.

In May 2023, nem rán was featured in Taste Atlas’s “100 best appetizers in the world” list. It also earned a spot in CNN’s “50 best foods in the world” ranking, solidifying its status as a globally loved dish.

Founded in 2015 and based in Zagreb, Croatia, Taste Atlas is a comprehensive food map showcasing traditional dishes from around the world.

Matija Babić, the platform’s founder, emphasized that the rankings are based on opinions and reviews from culinary experts and critics, ensuring the credibility and reliability of the accolades.

Nem rán’s inclusion on Taste Atlas’s list underscores the international admiration for Vietnam’s diverse and rich culinary traditions. The dish continues to captivate food lovers with its perfect blend of crispiness, aroma, and delectable taste.
