Ha Noi wrestlers win gold

Ha Noi topped the National Traditional Wrestling Championship, which concluded in the Thua Thien-Hue Province on Tuesday.

The athletes from the capital city won two gold medals, three silver and six bronze medals at the end of the four-day competition.

Vinh Phuc came in second with two gold medals, one silver medal and four bronze medals.

The military team finished third with two gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals.

More than 100 wrestlers took part in the tournament, competing in 12 weight categories, ranging from under-48kg to over-80kg.

Nam goes through in India

Ly Hoang Nam had no difficulty entering the quarter-finals of the ITF Asian Closed Junior Championships in India.

The No 1 seed beat Rio Noguchi of Japan 6-2, 6-1 yesterday (April 15) in the second round of the boys' singles event.

The Vietnamese star will next play No 5 seed Ito Yuya of Japan, who defeated his countryman Daisuke Sumizawa 6-1, 6-4 in a later match.

In the boys' doubles, Nam and Alberto Lim of the Philippines won 6-3, 6-2 over Japanese duo Rio Noguchi and Daisuke Sumizawa.

The No 1 pair will play No 3 seeds Ito Yuya and Yusuke Takahashi in the semi-finals.

Women's team to train

The national women's football team will start training today to prepare for the ASEAN Football Federation Cup.

Japanese coach Norimatsu Takashi yesterday (April 15) called up 27 players who impressed him during the first leg of the national championships in HCM City last month.

Ha Noi 1 and HCM City, who were on song at the tournament, account for eight players each.

Phong Phu Ha Nam will send seven while the rest come from Viet Nam Coal and Minerals and TNG Thai Nguyen.

The team will practise in Ha Noi for about 10 days before moving to HCM City for the second stage of the training campaign. The regional championships will be held from May 1-10 in the city.

Dinh tops cycling event

Nguyen Quoc Dinh stole the yellow jersey at the HCM City Television Cycling Tournament after the fifth stage from Vinh City to Dong Hoi City yesterday, April 15.

The rider from Ben Tre finished in the leading group and jumped to top of the overall rankings with a time of 13hr 13.52min.

Nguyen Minh Viet of BTV Binh Duong is second, followed by Ho Huynh Van An from Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang.

The fifth stage was the longest of the tournament, and welcomed a new stage winner – Ho Van Phuc of ADC Vinh Long Television.

Phuc took 4:50.03 to cover 199km, cycling at an average speed of 42.165km/h.

Phan Hoang Thai of Domesco Dong Thap and Le Van Dong of VTV Can Tho were second and third, respectively.

Today, cyclists compete on the six stage from Dong Hoi to No 9 Road National Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery over 106km, and the seventh stage from Dong Ha City in Quang Tri Province to Hue.
