Competitors set to make a splash at canoeing, rowing event

Da Nang (VNS)-The National Clubs Canoeing and Rowing Tournament will be held on March 6-15 in Dong Xanh Lake in Da Nang’s Hoa Vang District.

The event will attract the participation of 230 athletes from 20 teams nationwide. Among them, 102 athletes will compete in 16 rowing events while 128 athletes will partake in 36 canoeing events.

According to Nguyen Hai Duong, general secretary of the Viet Nam Canoeing, Rowing and Sailing Federation, the ten-day event is part of the federation’s system of selecting the best people to represent the national teams competing in international tournaments this year, especially for the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar in December and Asian Games in 2014.

Imexpan Pacific-IPP Company will be the main sponsor of the event.-

Vietnam wins gold at Australia Rowing Champs

Vietnamese rowers triumphed at the New South Wales State Rowing Championships in Australia on February 26.

Pham Thi Thao, Tran Thi Sam, Le Thi An and Tran Thi An outplayed their foreign rivals to bag home a gold medal in the women’s Quadruple Scull.

Other Vietnamese rowers failed to clinch any medals in the Single Scull and Double Scull events for both men and women.

After the tourney, they will take part in World Cup Regatta to be held in Sydney, Australia, from March 18-24.

This is a good start for Vietnam’s rowing team after its two-month training course in the country.

Tennis player play at Asian ITF competitions

Young Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien will go for U18 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Group 1 tournaments in Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines in March.

Thien, 17, is targeting a climb in the ITF junior rankings by taking part in these events. He currently ranks 141st in the world.

After these competitions, Thien, who is training in Chinese Taipei, will return Vietnam to compete in Men’s Futures to be held in southern province of Bac Lieu and HCM City.-

Int’l women’s cycling tourney to begin

The third Binh Duong International Women’s Cycling Open-Biwase Cup will be held on March 2-8.

The event is divided into seven stages. Participants will travel 630km through the provinces and cities of Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The tournament is expected to attract 11 domestic teams from around the country, including Can Tho, Hanoi, Hoa Binh, An Giang, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, and the host, Binh Duong.

The only invitee is Malaysia women cycling team.

The total prize pool is worth up to VND300 million, with the best individual taking home VND30 million and the best team VND20 million.

The winner of each stage will also be awarded a further VND5 million, while one of the top 20 competitors will receive the “Beauty of the Year” prize to celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8).

Vietnamese junior tennis players to compete in Asian topflight
 
The International Tennis Federation has invited four Vietnamese junior tennis players to play in the ITF Asia 14-and-under Development Championships in the Philippines.

They are Nguyen Dac Tien, Nguyen Linh Tiffany, Nguyen Mau Vinh Quang and Nguyen Thu Phuong.

They were invited to compete in the first division of the ITF event following outstanding performances at the recent Asian 14-and-under Division 2 Championship in HCM City.

They will compete in the event's auxiliary tournaments on March 5-15 in Manila and will be guided by two ITF coaches including Vietnamese Tran Quoc Phong and Sri Lankan Chris Pillai.

Women's cycling tournament takes to the road in Binh Duong

The third Binh Duong International Women's Cycling Open is scheduled to kick off in the southern province of Binh Duong on March 2.

The event, which runs until March 8, is divided into seven stages. Participants will travel 630km through the provinces and cities of Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

One Malaysian team and 10 domestic teams will compete for a total cash prize of VND300 million (US$14,000). At the same event last year, Nguyen Thi Thi of An Giang Plant Protection 2 won the yellow jersey.

Chinese chess competition kicks off

The National First Division Chinese Chess Tournament kicked off yesterday in HCM City’s Phu Tho Gymnasium.

The event attracted 71 players including 25 women from strong teams such as HCM City, Ha Noi, Binh Duong and Da Nang.

Some of nation’s most elite athletes are competing in the event including Uong Duong Bac, Nguyen Hoang Lam, Nguyen Thanh Bao, Dao Quoc Hung, Cao Phuong Thanh, Hoang Hai Binh and Ngo Lan Huong.

According to national head coach Hoang Dinh Hong, the event’s best athletes would be chosen for the national team to compete in international tournaments later this year.

The tourney will last until March 7.-

Women's football cup gets sponsor

Thai Son Bac Electric Equipment Trading Company will be the main sponsor of the National Women’s Football Championships this year, the Viet Nam Football Federation announced yesterday.

The event will kick off in the northern province of Ha Nam on March 8 with the participation of six teams from across the country.

The first leg matches take place from March 8-26 and the second leg matches will be between July 9 and July 22.

The champion will receive a gold medal and VND200 million (US$9,300), while the second and third-placed teams will get VND150 million and VND100 million, respectively.

Highlands host volleyball tourney

The seventh Binh Dien-VTV International Women's Volleyball Tournament will take place in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai from March 2-10.

The event will attract the participation of eight teams including four foreign outfits from Australia, China, South Korea, and Kazakhstan.

They will face off against the four elite domestic teams VTV-Binh Dien Long An, Lien Viet Post Bank, Vietinbank and VietsovPetro.

The winner will walk away with a prize of US$12,000 while the runners-up will receive $7,000 and $5,000 respectively.

In addition, many individual prizes will be awarded from the tournament’s prize pool which totals $26,000.

Viet Nam Television will broadcast all of the event’s matches live.
