The videos have been posted on TikTok by Thai Thao, 29, in Da Nang City, showing how Thao’s husband, a good looking man from Germany, takes part in Vietnamese culture.

Thao’s German husband is Heiko, born in 1991, from Munich. The couple made acquaintance via Facebook in mid-2021. It was Heiko who first sent a message and said he wanted to make friends with Thao.

During conservations with Thao, Heiko admitted that he had visited Hue in Vietnam and spent two years there because he loved the city so much. He returned to Germany because of Covid-19.

After one month of online communication, the couple began dating, though they had never met each other in person. Only six months later could Heiko obtain a visa to Vietnam to meet Thao.

At that time, Thao and Heiko met every day and traveled throughout Vietnam.

Heiko chose to settle down in Vietnam and marry Heiko. In January 2023, Heiko’s mother flew to Vietnam to discuss wedding procedures. The two families agreed that a wedding would be organized in Vietnam in accordance with local customs.

The couple now lives and works in Da Nang.

“What I love most about him is his closeness and friendliness. He is a good listener so all conflicts can be resolved peacefully,” she said.

Heiko is willing to learn and integrate into Vietnamese culture and society. He has experience in cooking, making offerings, and celebrating traditional Tet in Vietnam...

Thao said her husband always asks her parents about Vietnamese customs and procedures, as well as the meaning of ceremonies and rituals. After receiving guidance from everyone many times, Heiko has mastered everything from arranging dishes in a fest and lighting incense to lighting candles and pouring wine.

Heiko is happy about their life in Vietnam. He had wonderful experiences when returning to Thao’s hometown to attend death anniversary feasts. He enjoys the feeling of helping people and family union when people gather to prepare Vietnamese dishes, talk and enjoy food.

"I feel welcomed, and I am treated warmly and enthusiastically by everyone. I am very happy and joyful about that," Heiko said.

Previously, on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2023, Heiko and Thao's family wrapped banh tet (cylindric glutinous rice cake), prepared offerings for New Year's Eve, and stayed up late to cook banh tet.
