According to Tran Chi Hung, director of the provincial department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the first outbreak of ASF was discovered in Nhon Nghia commune, Chau Thanh A district in late April whilst the other outbreak was reported in Vinh Tuong commune, Vi Thuy district 10 days ago.
Immediately after being notified of the detection of ASF, the provincial department of Agriculture and Rural Development directed the animal health sector and other relevant agencies to cull the 68 pigs that were infected across the two households and take drastic measures to prevent the further spread of the epidemic.
A present, Hau Giang is home to more than 15,000 pig-farming households, mostly on a small scale with the total number of pigs reaching up to 160,000.
With the outbreak, it is the first locality in the Mekong Delta region to report the ASF virus.
