VietNamNet Bridge – The General Department of Anti-crime Police has instructed relevant police agencies to combine with the General Department of Customs to prevent smuggling of cars and motorcycles across the country.




The super-deluxe Lexus brand does not have an official distributor in Vietnam but more and more brand new Lexus cars have been imported into Vietnam in the form of the assets of repatriates. This is considered a loophole for tax evasion and smuggling.

To investigate car and motorcycle smuggling organizations from the U.S. to Vietnam in the form of assets of overseas Vietnamese who repatriate and the corruption offenders who give hands to smuggling, the police and the customs agency will join hands to attack this form of crime.

Specifically, the Economic Police Department has requested the General Department of Customs to provide documents regarding the import license of cars and motorcycles which are the property of the repatriates.

In addition, the police will coordinate with the local port authorities in the six cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Quang Ninh and Ba Ria-Vung Tau to hold in custody and maintain cars and motorcycles that have been imported at ports, which are the property of the repatriates.

The General Department of Anti-Crime Police also request the General Department of Customs to provide all records relating to the import of cars and motorcycles related to the repatriate’s assets from June 2011 to the end of December 2012.
