VietNamNet Bridge - Savy Helmet’s Assistant, a smart helmet which allows users to make and receive calls and read messages hands-free, can alert relatives in case of emergency.

The 2017 Kawai Business Startup, one of the best known startups competition for students, has given the first prize to the Mubahi team, which created the Savy Helmet Assistant.

Kawai Business Startup, organized annually since 2006 under the sponsorship of Kawai Foundation from Japan by TEC (Tomorrow Entrepreneurs Club) of the Hanoi Foreign Trade University, and under the sponsorship of the Japanese Embassy since 2014, is the incubator which supports young people’s business ideas. 

The competition serves as the launch pad for well known brands such as Rio Creative, Blue Angel, Ybox.vn, Tay May To Mo and My Thuat Bui.

The winter at the 2017 competition is a group of students from the Hanoi University of Science & Technology, Foreign Trade and Banking Academy.

Phan The Lam, head of the team, the fifth year student of the Hanoi University of Science & Technology, spent one year trying many different ideas before deciding to join forces with his friends to work on Savy Helmet’s Assistant and bring it to Kawai competition.

Savy has a round cylinder, which attaches to a curved base that can be easily attached to the helmet body. Besides the internal components, the outer shell of the device is set by a 3D printer.

The microphone is attached to one side of the helmet strap, next to users’ ears, thus allowing them to hear and view messages (in Google voice) by simply pressing a button on the device while they are in circulation.

Savy connects users’ phones via Bluetooth and it is integrated in motion sensor connected with a central microcontroller. Savy can read information about acceleration and angular velocity, then send to the sensor at a frequency of 3 ms each time. 

The microcontroller handles the information sent to it to determine whether the user has crashed.

In case accidents occur, the device will activate the user’s phone and send alerts to relatives through Savy Helmet’s Assistant app, while shows the position of accidents. 

In case relatives don’t have internet connection, the device will show the position of the user via SMS. 

Savy carriers can choose either to turn on the real-time alerting mechanism to alert relatives in emergency cases, or turn it off to ensure privacy. Even when they turn off the mechanism, the feature still runs and can give alerts when necessary.
