Short-form video refers to video with content in one minute. This kind of short video has become popular recently, but in fact, has had a long history.

According to Sprout Social, 50 percent of social network users prefer videos to other types of content.

This has led to the fact that short-form video became the most attractive type of social media for 66 percent of internet users in 2022, the figure which was far higher than the 50 percent seen two years before.

In terms of attractiveness, short-form video is in the No 1 position, surpassing other types of content such as images, live video, animated images and traditional text. Meanwhile, long-form video is in the No7 position in terms of popularity with just 24 polled people showing their interest.

According to Le Quang Tu Do, head of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information, when information becomes saturated, people’s attention tends to decrease and they tend to choose clips with short and lively content.

That is why short-form videos like TikTok are a favorite of youth and they more easily become trendy than long-form videos on YouTube, and documents and images on Facebook.

To satisfy people’s new tastes, Facebook and YouTube have launched Facebook Reels and YouTube Shorts, features that help users produce and share short-form videos.

However, when short-form videos become increasingly popular, the harm they bring to society also increases because of problems in TikTok content control.

Users nowadays have to witness more and more videos with sexually explicit content, which appear under the mode of short-form videos.

Most recently, the image of Luom, the cute little boy in a poem composed by the famous revolutionary poet To Huu, has been distorted with ridiculous lyrics, but they have quickly become trendy.

Vu Xuan Son from the WASP Media & Language at Umea University in Sweden said that social networks such as TikTok and Facebook use algorithms aiming to increase the interactions of users on the platform.

If young people watch videos on education, new technology and knowledge, this will help them improve their cognition. But if they cannot use social networks in the right way, the malicious content will make the whole society go backwards.
