VietNamNet Bridge – Three students in the central city of Da Nang have been fined VND10 million (US$481) each and four others issued warnings, for slandering another student on Facebook.

The Department of Information and Communications in Da Nang City on August 5 issued the fine on the trio and also issued warnings to four others for using offensive language against a girl on Facebook.

The penalized students included P.H.Q, 16, a dropout from Nguyen Hien Senior High School; K.N.A, 19, student of IT College; T.N.N, 18, twelfth grade student of Ton That Tung Senior High School; T.D.P, 20, student of Polytechnic University; H.K.K, 19, student of Economic University; P.Q.C, 19, student of Medicine University; and T.P.H.A, 17, from Tran Phu Senior High School.  

The above students used offensive words on Facebook to slander a girl who unsuccessfully attempted a suicide bid.

This is the first time authorities in Da Nang City have issued such a penalty. Moreover, related agencies have asked the local district government and schools to counsel these students.

According to police, the students should have been punished for using offensive words to insult another but this time wanted to give them an opportunity to correct and learn from their mistakes.
