A self-driving electric vehicle transports residents at Ecopark. FPT Software on October 31 announced its success in testing autonomous vehicles in the Ecopark Urban Area in the northern province of Hung Yen

FPT Software applied its self-driving technology to Yamaha electric vehicles, which successfully ran four kilometers and passed five stops and many barriers.

Passengers will be able to book rides through a smartphone app developed by FPT Software.

On its route, these self-propelled vehicles will automatically avoid other vehicles on roads and barriers in front of them, stop at pickup and drop-off bays and turn back to the start point to end the route.

“The successful self-driving auto test has marked a milestone for the firm in developing autonomous technology, boosting the automation sector in the country and bringing greater convenience to residents and tourists,” said Hoang Nam Tien, chairman of FPT Software.

Nguyen Dung Minh, deputy general director of Ecopark Corporation, said that the firm will consider applying the self-driving technology to serve residents in the urban area.

Ecopark has set a target of developing itself into a smart urban area, applying information technology and artificial intelligence to upgrade living standards and improving the general quality of life, he said.

FPT was the first firm to introduce the self-driving technology to Vietnam in October 2017. The firm had earlier succeeded in testing autonomous vehicles at Saigon Hi-Tech Park and Danang Hi-Tech Park.
