Most gold medals were awarded to Vietnamese athletes in Wrestling, Track-and-Field and Taekwondo.
Notably, four swimmers Kim Son, Huy Hoang, Quy Phuoc and Hung Nguyen defeated their Singaporean opponents, including Joseph Schooling, in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay to secure a gold medal. They even set a new SEA Games record, finishing first with a time of 7 minutes 16 seconds 31.
Six male wrestlers brought home six gold medals in the classical Greco-Roman style for different weight categories from 60 to 130kg. Women wrestlers are scheduled to go into competitions for weight categories from 50 to 76kg on May 18.
Other gold medals were presented to athletes in Track-and-Field, Chess, Taekwondo, Canoeing, Shooting and e-Sports. Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and his wife Pham Le Thao Nguyen pocketed two gold medals in the men’s and women’s blitz chess.
Quach Thi Lan won a gold medal in the women’s 400 hurdles, while her teammate Nguyen Thi Huyen finished second.
Veteran runner Nguyen Van Lai, 36, grabbed a gold medal in the men’s 10,000m race, and this is his second gold medal in the sport.
As of 10.30pm on May 17, Vietnam took 17 more golds and retained top place in the medal table with 105 gold, 65 silver and 64 bronze medals.
Thailand and the Philippines came in second and third, with 45 and 43 golds respectively.
