On the evening of April 6, Colonel Nguyen Ha Lai – Deputy Director and Head of the Criminal Investigation Agency of Quang Nam Provincial Police – confirmed that the unit was conducting a scene reenactment of the case in which a mother allegedly murdered her biological son to claim insurance money.
That night, police escorted the accused, To Thi Ty Na (born 1981), to her home in residential group 3, Ha Lam town (Thang Binh district, Quang Nam province) to reconstruct the crime scene.
Authorities cordoned off the area leading to Na’s home, where she and her children once lived, to maintain security and facilitate the investigation.
Outside, thousands of residents of Ha Lam gathered to watch and speculate on the ongoing case. By 9:30 PM, the scene reenactment was still underway.
Na married and had four children – three boys and one girl. In 2019, her husband passed away due to a serious illness. In 2021, her youngest son (born 2019) died, and in early 2023, her next youngest son (born 2017) also passed away. Both children were initially reported to have drowned after falling into buckets of water. Following their deaths, Na received over 4 billion VND (approximately 160,000 USD) in life insurance payouts.
As previously reported by VietNamNet, following the Ministry of Public Security’s directive to improve the handling and resolution of suspended investigations, Major General Nguyen Huu Hop, Director of the Quang Nam Provincial Police, instructed the Criminal Investigation Agency to review related cases.
From this review, investigators reopened the case involving the death of a child on January 2, 2023.
The investigation concluded that at approximately 10:05 PM on January 2, 2023, at her residence, Na’s biological son, Nguyen Van Hoang (born 2017), died in the bathroom. Based on the collected evidence and documentation, police determined that Na killed her son to fraudulently claim insurance money.
On the night of April 5, the Criminal Investigation Agency issued a decision to prosecute and temporarily detain To Thi Ty Na on charges of murder.
Colonel Nguyen Ha Lai stated that during the investigation, Na denied killing her son. However, based on the compiled evidence, authorities concluded that she was responsible for the death of her son, Nguyen Van Hoang, with the intent to benefit from the insurance policy.
According to Colonel Lai, the case was initially investigated by Thang Binh district police in 2023, but no conclusive results were reached at the time. Recently, provincial authorities took over the case files for further review and legal proceedings.
The case remains under investigation.
