VietNamNet Bridge – While the foreign passenger was busy at the ATM, a taxi driver of Hoang Long Taxi ran away with the passenger’s luggage in his car.
Taxi driver Nguyen Thanh Hai.
On March 19, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court trialed taxi driver Nguyen Thanh Hai of the Hoang Long Taxi, 39, for robbery.
According to the indictment, at about 0.45h on March 30, 2012, Ms. Ono Ayumi, Japanese tourist, got a Hoang Long cab, driven by Hai, from the Tan Son Nhat Airport to a hotel on De Tham Street, Pham Ngu Lao Ward , District 1, HCM City.
Arriving at the hotel, the charge box indicated a VND256,000 ($13) charge, so she gave Hai VND500,000 ($25). Hai held the money but he still signaled that it was not enough and asked for more.
The passenger gave him two more VND500,000 banknotes and a JPY1,000 banknote but the driver shook his head and asked for more money. Without cash on her wallet, Ms. Ono asked Hai to take her to an ATM for withdrawing money.
While the passenger was busy at the ATM, Hai fled, with her entire luggage on the car, worth over VND19 million ($800).
The Japanese woman reported the case to the police. On April 4, 2012, Hai surrendered and confessed the whole offense.
Identifying that the defendant's offense is serious and causing a bad impression of foreign tourists about the country, the panel sentenced Hai to two years in prison.
