Quyet is Southeast Asia Player of the Week

Vietnamese forward Nguyen Van Quyet has been selected as the Southeast Asia Player of the Week by the Malaysian edition of goal.com.

The 23-year-old player scored one goal in the match between Viet Nam and Malaysia during the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) -Suzuki Cup's first leg, semi-final held in Malaysia on Sunday.

"The Vietnamese youngster performed impressively in the first leg of the AFF Cup semi-final against Malaysia. Quyet showed his capacity after leading the Golden Star [team to] clinch a 2 – 1 comeback victory at Shah Alam. The Ha Noi T&T star [became] the match-winning scorer and inspired the equalising goal, which was converted by Vo Huy Toan," Goal Indonesia's Eric Noveanto commented.

Apart from Quyet, midfielder Nguyen Huy Hung was also highly praised by Goal Malaysia's Ooi Kin Fai: "Instrumental in Viet Nam's win over Malaysia, he constantly [halted the] Malaysian attacks and [was the] first to launch Viet Nam's dangerous counter attacks. His ability to turn defence into an attack is a [skill that] few have within this region."

Cuong ousted from US badminton tournament

Young player Pham Cao Cuong lost to seed No 2 Misha Zilberman of Israel in the third round of the 2014 K&D Graphics/Yonex Grand Prix Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club in California on Wednesday.

Eighteen-year-old Cuong, Viet Nam's sole representative, was defeated 2-0 (21-19 21-17).

Earlier, Cuong, world No 282, beat Zulhelmi Zulkiffli of Malaysia, world No 348 2-0 (22-20, 21-19) in the second round.

The US$50,000 event will last until tomorrow.

Young tennis star Nam advances at American Orange Bowl

Ly Hoang Nam of Viet Nam booked a place in the ongoing third round of the Metropolia Orange Bowl International Championship in Florida, the US.

Nam defeated host player Kalman L. Boyd 6-4, 7-6(0) in the second round of the boys' singles and will next meet Reilly Opelka, another American, who won 6-3, 6-4 over Yunseong Chung from Korea.

In the boys' doubles, Nam and Mate Valkusz also advanced to the second round. The No 8 seed beat Nicolas Moreno De Alboran and Gerardo Penchyna Cardenas 7-5, 7-5. Their next rivals are local duo Tommy Paul and Nathan Ponwith. The annual tournament for boys and girls in singles and doubles categories kicked off on Monday and will wrap up on Sunday.

Ha Noi stay on top in national games

Ha Noi retained the top position yesterday in the ongoing National Sports Games in the northern province of Nam Dinh.

The team won 116 golds, 92 silvers and 95 bronzes in the medal tally, followed by HCM City with 75 golds, 64 silvers and 61 bronzes and the Military team with 40 golds, 35 silvers and 69 bronzes.

Hanoian athletes Nguyen Van Hung and Nguyen Ngoc Quang earned two more gold medals for their team in the men's triple jump and men's 100m hurdle. The team also won three golds in the Wushu event and three golds in archery.

In the women's 400m final, national member Nguyen Thi Huyen of Nam Dinh won the gold medal after defeating Thanh Hoa's Quach Thi Lan.

Huyen finished first with a time of 52.76secs, while Lan came in second with a time of 52.80secs.

Both Huyen and Lan underwent training in the United States early this year.

In the men's 400m, Lan's brother Quach Cong Lich continued to compete successfully and won his second gold medal with a time of 47.67secs. He earned his first gold medal in the men's 400m hurdle.

In the women's 100m hurdle, Tran Thi Yen Hoa of Hue took the lead with a time of 13.61secs.

Vietnam wins first gold at 17th ASEAN University Games

Karate artists earned the first gold medal for Vietnam on December 11 at the ongoing 17th ASEAN University Games (AUG 17) in Palembang, Indonesia.

In the women’s kata (performance) team event, Nguyen Minh Phuong, Nguyen Phuong Uyen and Hoang Thi Lan Huong defeated their host rivals 5-0.

AUG is held every two years by the ASEAN countries in rotation. This year’s event features 20 sports with 225 sets of medals.

The 50-strong Vietnamese delegation will compete in six sports, namely track and field, swimming, table-tennis, Taekwondo, Karate and chess.

At AUG 16 held in Laos, Vietnam ranked second with 56 gold, 35 silver and 28 bronze medals.-VNA

Quyen wins eighth stage of Trans-Viet cycling tour

Tran Van Quyen of the Military team bested strong rivals to win the eighth stage of the Trans-Viet cycling tournament yesterday.

With a strong sprint, Quyen clocked a top speed of 40.108 km/h during the 62km stage from Ha Tinh city in Ha Tinh Province to Nghe An Province's Nam Dan District. He completed the event in 1hr 32.45min.

Nguyen Thanh Tam of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi overcame Le Nguyet Minh of HCM City's Vinamit to rank second.

Tam also held onto the yellow jersey for best overall time with a total time of 23:15.07, followed by Le Ngoc Son of Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap 1 and Laos' Ariya Phounsanath.

Son's teammate Do Tuan Anh of Dong Thap 1 won the green jersey for scoring the most points with a total of 151 points after eight stages.

In the team ranking, Dong Thap 1 led the team race with a combined time of 69:49.05, followed by ADC-Vinh Long Television and HCM City.

The athletes have a day off today. Tomorrow, they will compete in the ninth stage, 24 laps around Ha Noi's Hoan Kiem Lake.

Huyen breaks national record in weightlifting event

Weightlifter Vuong Thi Huyen of Ha Noi broke the national record in the women's 48kg category at the ongoing National Sports Games in the northern province of Nam Dinh yesterday.

The 22-year-old player raised 181kg in total. Do Thi Thu Hoai of the Ministry of Public Security and Duong Thi Bich Tuyen of Soc Trang were the runners-up with 179kg and 174kg respectively.

In the women's 53kg event, Hanoian Nguyen Thi Quy also set a national record with a total lift of 202kg. Vu Thi Nhu Quynh of Hai Phong came second with 197kg and Tran Thi My Dung of HCM City placed third with 195kg.

Around 300 athletes from 33 teams began competing in the wushu event yesterday for 38 sets of medals.
