According to local people, the black, 2-3 cm worms appeared in large volumes after a downpour on the morning of July 24.

Along Highway 611 in Que Chau commune, the worms covered the road surface, swept into houses. To cope with the insects, people used pesticides and sprayed lime but these methods were not effective.

Local residents said that this was the first time they saw such huge volumes of worms. "In the last two days I and my two grandchildren tried to sweep worms from the house but we could not stop them. Worms even crawled into our food," said a woman.

Mr. Doan Ha, a local official said this species of worm annually appears on the field but not as much as this year. "Sudden changes in weather made profound changes to the insect. They could be able to eat grass so they crawled into houses. This pest is not harmful to humans," he said.

According to Mr. Cao Duc Tan, Head of the Plant Protection Station of Que Son district, this species of work usually appears each 3-4 years on dried and fallowed rice fields. They usually eat grass. If they develop into epidemic, they will make damage to crops, but little damage on rice.

"Farmers should not panic. Krate2.5EC, Phadan95 or Regent800 drugs can kill this worm. However, to be saved, farmers should use lime to prevent worms from crawling into the house," Tan said.
