On the rankings made by www.2700chess.com, Quang Liem’s Elo after 2013 Spice Cup is only 2703.2 and he fell from 34th to 44th.
The reason for the downgrade of Quang Liem was his poor performance at the Spice Cup. In nine games in this tournament, Quang Liem won only three and got 6 draws with the rivals whose Elo ratings are much lower than his.
The eligible Elo rating for Spice Cup contestants is quite low (over 2100) so even if Liem won the championship, his Elo would have been reduced. That is why Quang Liem’s schoolmates at Webster University as George Meier and So Wesley did not attend the event. In this rankings, So Wesley gained 4.8 in Elo rating and jumped up by 6 spots to 35th in the world.
On the rankings of the Asian players, Quang Liem also dropped to 7th after Anand (India, 8th in the world), Wang Yue (China, 16th), Wang Hao (China, 18th), Ding Liren (China, 34th), So Wesley (Philippines, 35th) and Harikrishna (India, 37th).
Quang Liem’s current position is only temporary because from now until early November, there will be many chess tournaments and the Elo ratings of chessmen will change.
