Typically, only Pro models are equipped with advanced features. However, the upcoming iPhone 17 is rumored to include a feature that has never been available on the standard line.

Is ProMotion no longer exclusive to Pro models?

Usually, advanced technologies gradually make their way to more affordable models, and this trend is expected to continue with the iPhone 17.

Face ID, Dynamic Island, and the Action button initially debuted on Pro models but were later integrated into standard iPhones. Now, it seems that ProMotion will be the next feature to join this list on the iPhone 17.

This rumor has surfaced numerous times in recent months and has now been reaffirmed by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman stated that the standard iPhone 17 will be upgraded to feature a ProMotion display.

Previously, in September 2024, Ross Young, a specialist from Display Supply Chain Consultants, also predicted that both iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air would come with ProMotion 120Hz display technology.

This means that the iPhone 17 and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air (expected to replace the iPhone 17 Plus) could support a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, offering a smoother scrolling experience and improved video playback when needed.

ProMotion will also enable the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air to reduce their refresh rates to save power. For instance, iPhone 13 Pro models can drop to 10Hz, while iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 16 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that shows lock screen information even when the device is locked.

However, it is unclear whether the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will reduce the refresh rate to 10Hz or 1Hz.

A long-awaited feature for standard iPhones

ProMotion, Apple’s branding for the 120Hz display technology, was introduced on Pro models in 2021 with the iPhone 13 Pro. However, it remained exclusive to the Pro line, with even the standard iPhone 16 launched last year still featuring a 60Hz display.

Despite Apple maintaining this limitation, 120Hz displays are no longer considered a premium feature in the smartphone market. Budget phones like the Samsung Galaxy A35 ($399), Nothing Phone 3a ($379), and Motorola Moto G 2025 ($200) all offer 120Hz screens. This makes the continued use of 60Hz displays on sub-$999 iPhones feel outdated.

With numerous leaks hinting at the inclusion of ProMotion on the iPhone 17, it seems almost certain that this upgrade will happen. Among these sources, Ross Young’s information is particularly reliable, as he has consistently provided accurate insights into Apple’s display technologies. Before the iPhone 16 series was launched, Young was the first to reveal that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max would feature larger displays of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively.

Earlier this year, the source Instant Digital reiterated this information, and with Gurman’s confirmation, it now appears unlikely that Apple will maintain a 60Hz display for another generation.

The new iPhone lineup is expected to be announced in September 2025, following Apple’s annual tradition. The 2025 models will likely include the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, with many new features anticipated for the Pro series.
