VietNamNet Bridge – The People's Committee of the central province of Quang Nam held a ceremony yesterday, April 15, to posthumously honour late Acting President Huynh Thuc Khang with the Gold Star Order.

President Truong Tan Sang hands over a Gold Star Order to a representative of Quang Nam Province and a relative of late acting President Huynh Thuc Khang.

 

The patriotic scholar received the country's highest distinction in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Viet Nam's struggle for national liberation.

Handing over the order to Khang's relatives, President Truong Tan Sang described his revolutionary life as a shining example for younger generations to learn from and follow.

His last words were considered an appeal for unity, a request that people trust that the country would have a bright future under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh, Sang added.

Khang (1876-1947) was born in Tien Canh Commune, Tien Phuoc District of Quang Nam Province.

He was the acting President of the nascent Democratic Republic of Viet Nam in 1946 and stood in for President Ho Chi Minh while the latter attended peace talks in France.

He also worked with other patriotic scholars like Phan Chau Trinh and Tran Quy Cap to pioneer the Duy Tan movement (1906-1908), which raised a sense of patriotism among many people from all over the country.

In 1927, he founded Tieng Dan (Voice of the People), a newspaper in central Thua Thien-Hue Province, and served as its editor-in-chief. With his far-sighted vision and logical thinking, he strongly condemned the French colonists' savage, feudal regime.

As a historian, Khang also left many valuable documents, some of which claim Viet Nam's sovereignty over Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos.

Yesterday, President Sang also pledged to support fishermen by adjusting policies to provide them with assistance in petrol costs and shipbuilding. This would help them generate a higher income and safeguard the nation's sovereignty over seas and islands.

Talking with fishermen in Ly Son island district in central Quang Ngai Province, Sang urged them to uphold solidarity while fishing off-shore – an occupation that involves spending days, even months, away from the mainland.

He suggested local fishermen clearly know the locations where they fish and thoroughly follow international regulations and laws related to fishing grounds.

Many fishermen expressed their wish for a policy exclusively designed for those who encounter risks at sea.

They say the Party and State need to protect their legitimate right to work at fishing grounds in Viet Nam's sovereignty and ask marine police to support their operations.

Many recommended the State promptly invest in the building of frozen seafood processing facilities and provide capital to bring electricity from the national grid to the island.
