The victim is Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Dung, chief of police of Tien Loi Commune in Phan Thiet.

The paper reported that around 7am, a man in his twenties who was likely high on drugs stood on a stretch of National Highway 1A south of Phan Thiet and held up a knife, stopping vehicles and causing a traffic jam.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Dung arrived at the scene to persuade the young man to let go of the knife and stop disturbing traffic; however, the man desperately tried to rush into the road. The policeman attempted to stop him and take the knife, but was stabbed in the shoulder.

The wound severed his aorta and he died on the way to hospital.

Following the stabbing, the young man fled towards Ham My Commune of Ham Thuan Nam District.

Cornered by local people, the man tried to take his own life with the knife. He survived a stab wound and was taken to the emergency department at Binh Thuan General Hospital.

The police are examining the scene and will handle the case according to the law.
