Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a conference on March 13 at the government office to summarize the organization of the US - Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Summit last month.
Attending the conference were Politburo Member and Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and Head of the CPV Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education Vo Van Thuong; Member of the Politburo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh; and representatives from ministries, departments, branches and localities.
Prime Minister Phuc reiterated the direction of the Politburo at the conference, saying that the Summit was a political and foreign event that held great meaning for Vietnam. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the focal point, presiding over the coordination of all relevant activities and directing special measures for President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un to visit Vietnam.
“We directed matters deeply and decisively with necessary and timely solutions at all levels and all sectors and agencies,” he said. Directing was only one part, while equally important was the enthusiastic response among all levels, sectors and the people, for example when Hanoians gave water to the media or others voluntarily dismantled billboards and cleaned up sidewalks.
Appreciating the sense of responsibility and coordination shown at all levels, sectors, agencies and businesses, the Prime Minister said: “We were fully prepared in all five stages: content; infrastructure; the media; security; and the sense, responsibility and affection of Hanoians. We created a deep consensus among society and overseas Vietnamese.”
He went on to say that the success of the Summit gave Vietnam a new profile. President Trump and Chairman Kim expressed their thanks to Vietnam and were by impressed by the country’s organization of the Summit. This was a strong message to the international community about the rising profile and willingness of Vietnam to further develop its role of actively contributing to the common goals of the region and the world in a spirit of creating peace.
It was also a very good step given that Vietnam is taking on the ASEAN Chairmanship and being nominated as a Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term, creating a favorable atmosphere and environment to promote bilateral activities with the US in the future as well as creating a basis to promote relations with the DPRK when the situation is favorable.
Regarding direction in the time to come, the Prime Minister said that all levels and sectors need to take advantage of the opportunities for socioeconomic development, first of all to attract investment and tourism, continue to maintain cultural lifestyles, especially in Hanoi and localities, maintain a peaceful environment, and take advantage of opportunities to develop the country.
