Scuba diving and underwater photography are popular activities for tourists visiting Phu Quy Island. For a fee of 1.5 to 3 million VND, tourists can learn safe diving techniques before practicing underwater photography.
Phu Quy Island in the central province of Binh Thuan is one of Vietnam's premier diving destinations, thanks to its stunning natural scenery and clear blue waters. During the summer, the island sees an influx of tourists eager to experience its underwater wonders.
My Hang, a Hanoi resident, visited Phu Quy with her son in early June. In addition to exploring the island's attractions, she also tried her hand at underwater photography.
Hang discovered scuba diving a year ago and joined a diving club to improve her health. Her passion for the sport grew, leading her to explore underwater beauty both in Vietnam and abroad. With her experience in diving and mermaid diving, Hang aimed to capture unique underwater photos during her Phu Quy trip.
To take beautiful underwater photos, Hang not only mastered free diving but also practiced ballet and flexibility exercises to enhance her underwater poses. She also learned to relax her hands, shoulders, and facial muscles to appear natural in the photos.
"Working as a team is crucial when taking underwater photos. Both the diver and the supporting team must understand each other's ideas to achieve the best angles and poses. Safety is paramount, especially when using weights to stay submerged," Hang explained.
She admitted that underwater photography is challenging and weather-dependent. She had to practice extensively in deep pools and adjust to the water pressure and buoyancy in the sea.
"When the weather is calm, taking photos is easier. However, on overcast days with strong currents, it becomes much more difficult and less safe," she added.
Despite the difficulties, Hang felt that the effort was worthwhile, resulting in mesmerizing underwater photos.
Like Hang, Hoai Anh from Ho Chi Minh City also visited Phu Quy to experience underwater photography. She enjoyed observing marine life and capturing unique underwater photos.
Phu Quy offers various diving and underwater photography services, catering to different budgets. Hoai Anh chose a basic service package priced at 250,000 VND per person, focusing on the diving experience rather than extensive training.
"I traveled to the diving area by canoe, which took about 10 minutes. After basic diving instruction, the team helped me take a few beautiful underwater photos with coral reefs," Hoai Anh said.
According to Chau Duc Chinh, a local photographer, Phu Quy has many excellent diving spots, with Bai Can and Bai Lang being the most popular. Bai Can features long stretches of white sand, abundant coral reefs, and various fish species, ideal for free diving from June to September. Bai Lang has deeper waters and a diverse coral ecosystem, best explored from February to May.
In addition to quick diving experiences priced at 250,000 VND, Phu Quy offers short-term diving packages ranging from 1 to 2 days, costing between 1.5 to 3 million VND per person. These packages include comprehensive safety training, such as pressure equalization, abdominal breathing, breath-holding, and using fins for swimming.
During free diving, tourists should use reef-safe sunscreen and wear socks for comfort. It's essential to be in good health and avoid stimulants like alcohol and caffeine before diving. Furthermore, divers must refrain from damaging coral reefs and marine life.
