The Serbian trainer failed to lead the team to their first-ever national premier league trophy win, although Thanh Hoa received strong support and shopped a lot this season.

Thanh Hoa finished at second position with 48 points, behind champions Quang Nam. It is their best result, so far, in their 17-year history at this competition.

Thanh Hoa president Doan Van Phuong confirmed Petrovic’s departure. The Serbian was with Thanh Hoa for close to one year.

The 70-year-old coach has 34 years’ experience in Europe, the Middle East and China.

Petrovic won the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) with Red Star Belgrade in 1991.

He also helped Beijing Guoan bag the Chinese FA Cup in 2003.

In May, he was unveiled as the new manager of Levski Sofia, replacing Stoycho Stoey. He left the club after five months.

Petrovic also managed Levski Sofia in 2000-01, winning the championship.

He said he was pleased with Thanh Hoa’s result and believed the team would be much better in the future.

He said he had received offers from non-Vietnamese clubs, however, he wanted to spend time with the family first before considering the invitations.
