An investigation showed that Elmer Eduardo Nunez Correa, 44, and a group of friends went to Vietnam as tourists on August 2014.

From October 2014 to December 2015, Correa and his two accomplices, all Peruvians, conducted four robberies in HCM City, Khanh Hoa and Dong Nai provinces, mostly at ATMs.

On October 15, 2014, Correa and his gang broke into Maximark supermarket in Tan Binh District, HCM City. They took away jewellery, including diamonds and pearls, and VND32 million in cash from ATM machines.

On February 25, 2015, the group broke an ATM of Agribank Bac Sai Gon Branch in District 12, stealing nearly VND1 billion.

Using the same method, they continued to rob VND1.5 billion from two ATMs in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa in March and nearly VND900 million from an ATM in the southern province of Dong Nai in December 2015.

Correa was the only one arrested by the police, as his accomplices have fled the country to escape convictions.
