MOET vows to improve lecturers' qualification

The Hong Duc University in Thanh Hoa provincewants o enroll 80 students for four pedagogical training majors, offering many preferences and promising future jobs. However, very few students have applied.

Thanh Hoa is the first province in the country that is applying a policy on ordering pedagogical schools to produce high-quality teachers. The provincial authorities promise to arrange jobs for the students after graduation.

In 2018-2019, Hong Duc University needs 80 students for four majors – math, physics, literature and history. Students must have a high-school final exam score of 24 at minimum (for three exam subjects) to be eligible to apply for the training program.

The graduates will be allocated to high schools in Thanh Hoa province in 2022-2030 to replace the teachers who retire. 

In Nghe An province, the local pedagogical junior college planned to enroll 200 students, but found 130. Some training majors did not get any applications.

Some analysts say that excellent students tend to turn their back to pedagogical schools because there is a high number of secondary school teachers in Nghe An. In general, there are not many job opportunities for teachers, while the pay is unattractive.

In the 2017 enrollment season, Nghe An Pedagogical Junior College could not find students for math, literature and biology majors.

According to Trinh Dao Chien, rector of the Gia Lai Pedagogical Junior College, in the 2017-2018 academic year, the school had 20-30 redundant lecturers. The figure rose to 60 this year.

The Gia Lai Pedagogical Junior College has been suffering from a lack of students for many years, especially students in special majors such as arts, music and physical education. 

Meanwhile, the number of students registering to study history, geography, and technical subjects are not high enough to set up classes.

Since the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has tightened control over the quality of input students of pedagogical schools and the training quality, the lack of students is believed to be even more serious in the future. 

The ministry decided that students are eligible to apply for pedagogical universities if they have at least a 17 exam score, and apply for junior colleges if they have 15.

However, students with 15-17 exam scores would rather apply for admission in schools in large cities, rather than pedagogical schools.
