On the afternoon of November 19, as part of Vietnam International Digital Week 2024, the fifth ASEAN 5G Conference convened to discuss the development and implementation of 5G across Southeast Asia.
Attendees included Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Phan Tam, representatives from ASEAN member states, and telecommunications businesses from both the region and beyond.
Launched in 2018 as a Vietnamese initiative, the ASEAN 5G Conference aims to strengthen regional cooperation on policies, investments, and advancements in 5G technology, services, and applications.
Delegates shared updates on the progress of 5G deployment within their countries, showcased emerging technologies, and exchanged insights on Open RAN (Open Radio Access Network) systems. Discussions also centered on key priorities such as Open RAN deployment, regulatory frameworks for 5G, technological innovation, and building ecosystems to drive collaboration.
Deputy Minister Phan Tam emphasized the transformative nature of 5G, stating: “5G is not only a technological breakthrough but also a key driver of economic growth, social development, and innovation. It is reshaping industries, creating new business models, and enhancing the quality of life for millions.”
Applications of 5G range from smart cities and healthcare to autonomous vehicles and immersive digital experiences. The Deputy Minister noted several successful case studies across ASEAN that demonstrate the transformative power of 5G and highlighted Open RAN as a crucial component in accelerating its deployment.
Despite the progress, challenges remain. These include spectrum management, standardization, cybersecurity, and developing a skilled workforce. Deputy Minister Phan Tam stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration to address these issues, urging ASEAN countries to work together to unlock 5G’s full potential.
“This fifth ASEAN 5G Conference provides an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas, share best practices, and forge new partnerships. By working together, we can build a more connected, sustainable, and prosperous ASEAN,” he added.
