According to the Steering Board for Flood and Storm Control, under the impacts of storm Sonamu, a fishing boat in Binh Thuan was sunk offshore Vung Tau city on the morning of January 4. Of the seven fishermen on board, one died.

Two other fishing vessels from Binh Dinh and Quang Nam provinces had a breakdown and were dragged to the shore. Two coal tankers had their prop shaft broken and were towed to Tien Sa Port of Da Nang city.

Meanwhile, Sonamu is moving further away and is no longer able to directly affect the waters of Vietnam. This morning, January 7, the storm was about 300 miles southeast of Con Dao Island.

Today the storm is moving to the southwestern direction with a speed of 5-10km per hour. It is forecasted that on the morning of January 8, the storm will be 350 km away from Con Dao Island. It will move towards Malaysian waters and wane then.

Sonamu is the first storm of the year in the East Sea. A few days ago, typhoon Wukong entered this region, as the last or the tenth typhoon in the East Sea in 2012.
