VietNamNet Bridge – The number of incidents related to violations of aviation safety and security has surged in January-September against the same period last year, according to statistics of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).

There were 210 cases of safety violations, soaring 39% over the year-earlier period, and 226 ones of security infringements, nearly doubling last year’s number.

Technical problems still remained quite prevalent with 103 incidents while human errors involving flight crews and ground staff accounted for 21 cases. In addition, more passengers failed to comply with aviation safety regulations with 20 cases recorded, the CAAV said.

Notably, the fact that a VietJetAir airplane mistakenly transported passengers from Hanoi to Cam Ranh Airport on June 19 while a Vietnam Airlines plane nearly collided with another of Jetstar Pacific due to wrong orders by a Danang Airport air traffic controller on June 27 also manifested faults in the flight management.

Although such incidents were discovered and handled timely, the CAAV pointed out a number of shortcomings in the local aviation sector.

“In addition to the poor observation of regulations at airports, there remain problems in the management and collaboration between the CAAV and local airport authorities,” a representative of CAAV was quoted by Vietnam News Agency.

In order to enhance aviation safety and security, CAAV is expected to implement a master plan on comprehensive improvement of the civil aviation and airport authorities by 2020 if it is approved by the Ministry of Transport.

In the January-September period, local air carriers conducted more than 115,000 flights with the combined number of delays and cancellations making up nearly 21%. CAAV also carried out as many as 91 inspections and imposed administrative fines worth a total VND1.72 billion.
