According to recently announced findings, the Tay Bac Project has identified and assessed 110 mineral deposits in the Northwest region of Vietnam, including 40 gold mines with an estimated reserve of nearly 30 tons of gold.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has officially released the results of the “Comprehensive Survey and Geological Mapping Project at 1:50,000 Scale in the Northwest Region to Support Sustainable Socioeconomic Development Planning” (commonly known as the Tay Bac Project).

Deputy Minister Tran Quy Kien stated that after nearly eight years of implementation, the project has successfully completed detailed geological and mineral mapping over an area of 13,381 square kilometers across the Northwest.

The survey uncovered 110 mineral sites spanning 25 types of valuable and strategically important resources.

Among the most remarkable finds were 40 gold mines containing a total of 29.8 tons of gold classified as level 333 reserves (preliminary estimates pending detailed evaluation). Additionally, researchers detected a significant copper deposit in Lao Cai province that includes about 420 kg of accompanying gold.

Deputy Minister Kien emphasized that the Northwest is not only a strategic frontier region but also a rich repository of natural mineral resources.

He called on technical agencies, local leaders, and businesses to continue close collaboration, especially in applying digital technologies to manage these resources effectively. He also stressed the importance of enhancing monitoring capabilities to promptly detect and prevent illegal mining activities in order to preserve natural resources.

The newly discovered deposits across 110 sites and 25 mineral types present a valuable source of raw materials. If responsibly exploited, processed, and utilized, they could provide essential inputs for various industries and contribute significantly to local and national economic growth.
