A cold front is sweeping into Vietnam, with its initial effects felt in the northeastern region today. Starting December 7, the cold air will intensify, causing widespread rain and chill across northern and north-central Vietnam.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) reports that the cold air mass is currently affecting some northern mountainous areas. Today, it is expected to extend its influence to other parts of the northeastern region.
By tomorrow (December 7), the cold air will strengthen, affecting the northwestern region, the north-central region, and parts of the central and southern-central regions. Northeasterly winds will reach speeds of 3–4 on the Beaufort scale inland and 4–5 along the coast.
Northern Vietnam: Rainy and cooler today, turning cold tomorrow, with temperatures ranging from 15–18°C, and 12–14°C in the mountains. In high-altitude areas, temperatures may dip below 10°C.
Hanoi: Light rain today and cooler temperatures; it will turn cold starting December 7, with lows between 15–18°C.
From December 6 to 7, northern regions will experience scattered rain showers, while central and north-central regions may see isolated heavy rain and thunderstorms. Adverse weather, including lightning, strong gusts, and whirlwinds, may occur.
Although this cold spell will not drastically lower temperatures, rain will enhance the chilly feeling. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise around December 10–11, with sunny intervals, but nighttime lows will remain at 16–18°C. A stronger cold front is predicted to arrive on December 12, bringing another wave of cold weather to the north.
Meteorologists warn that thunderstorms and accompanying phenomena like whirlwinds, lightning, and strong winds may damage crops, infrastructure, and homes. Heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes. Cold weather might also negatively affect crops and livestock.
