In the meeting with OCA Chairman Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah at OCA headquarters in Kuwait, the Vietnamese delegation, led by Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh, presented Vietnam’s dilemma in its preparation for the 18th Asian Games. An unfavorable economic situation and lack of experience in organizing big events were the two prime rationales for withdrawing, Anh reported.

The OCA Chair sympathized with Vietnam’s difficulties and confirmed that the OCA would not fine Vietnam for the withdrawal.

The OCA charter does not fix the penalty for countries that withdraw from hosting the Asian Games. The penalty is solely based on the decision of the OCA after hearing out the host country’s case.

In the case of Vietnam, Vice Chair of the Vietnam Olympic Committee Hoang Vinh Giang convincingly presented Vietnam’s reasons, to earn sympathy from the OCA officials.

Vietnam also reported to the OCA on the preparation process of the Asian Beach Games 2016 in the coastal city of Nha Trang. Vietnam is committed to organizing this event successfully.

The press conference announcing Vietnam’s decision to withdraw as host of the 18th Asian Game was held in Kuwait on Thursday morning. The meeting was chaired by the Director General Husain Al Musallam.
