VietNamNet Bridge – The life of a patient with the AH3 influenza infection has been saved with the help of new technology, Deputy Director of Da Nang Hospital Le Duc Nhan said.

Doctors use extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology to save the patient with the AH3 influenza infection.

Nhan said this was the first time the hospital used the new extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology to save the patient.

ECMO is a treatment method that uses a pump and artificial lung for blood circulation in a very ill person, providing heart-lung bypass support.

The patient, a 17-year-old student from Dien Ban District in the central city of Da Nang, had been hospitalised last Saturday, with symptoms of falling blood pressure, coma and respiratory failure.

Shortly after being hospitalised, he was transferred to an intensive care unit.

Tests showed that the man had AH3 influenza and superinfection of the lung.

The patient's lung condition has now improved, with stable blood levels.

On the same day, doctors also used this technology to save a second person from the central Quang Nam Province's Dai Loc District.

The 23-year-old patient was hospitalised in an emergency, with myocarditis and cardiac arrest.

The doctors are struggling to save the patient.
