Nearly 500 pigs die of hunger at a farm in Bac Giang Province between February 21-24 as local residents prevented the transportation of feed as a protest against the farm’s pollution.

Speaking to local media on February 27, vice chairman of Son Dong District People's Committee, Le Duc Thang, vowed to punish those who were involved.

"We've issued a fine of VND 500 million to Son Dong Livestock Company for causing environment pollution around their pig farm and asked them to deal with the pollution," the official said. "We've also asked the local police and the department of environment and natural resources to monitor the company's activities and talk with local residents about their protests."

The official condemned some of the local residents’ actions such as preventing the transportation of feed for the pigs, which caused the company great losses.

"People will be held responsible for preventing the company's operation and causing them losses," he said.

A report from the Son Dong Livestock Company said that 462 pigs at the farm had died of hunger between February 21- 24 when local residents picketed the farm to prevent the transportation of feed, causing them estimated losses of VND1.10 billion.

"Following negotiations with the local authorities, residents have removed their picket and we've been able to transport 280 tonnes of feed which is enough for the pigs to eat for eight days," the company said.

An overview of the pig farm

Son Dong Livestock Company is raising 14,100 pigs on a farm of over 67 hectares in Son Dong District. The farm polluted the local environment after failing to repair their wastewater pipes some years ago. They restored the wastewater treatment system in 2020 and promised not to let pollution happen again.

However, the same problem occurred on February 15, leading to local protests.

Director of the company, Ngo Xuan Truong, said that after paying the fine of VND500 million, they are upgrading the wastewater treatment system again.
