VietNamNet Bridge - Mr. Pham Nhu So, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Province, said that the Government has approved a project to install submarine cables to transmit power to the Ly Son Island district, with a total investment of nearly VND1 trillion ($50 million).

In November 2012, the Central Region Power Corporation in collaboration with the Ly Son District People's Committee to conduct a field survey to prepare for the project to install submarine cables to transmit electricity from the mainland to the island.

Through the survey, the Corporation is expected to set the connection points at the Dung Quat 110 KV substation or the Dung Quat port 110 KV substation.The submarine cable will run from Thanh Thuy village on the mainland to Tay village on Ly Son Island.

Over the past 10 years, many domestic and foreign investors went to Ly Son Island district survey to invest in wind and solar power projects. But so far more than 22,000 local people still suffer from severe power shortage.

Due to the difference between the selling price and production cost and distribution fees of power on Ly Son Island district, annually the electricity industry suffers losses of more than VND10 billion ($500,000).

Mr. Tran Ngoc Nguyen, Ly Son Island District Chairman said that the submarine cable project is a great opportunity for the island to attract investment, create a driving force of economic, social growth, local security and defense.

Ly Son Island district has been approved by the Government in the extended planning of over 45,300 hectares of the Dung Quat Economic Zone, with the key position in protecting national waters. The Government has identified Ly Son Island as one of the six islands of the country that must build a strong economy and strong defense.
