VietNamNet Bridge – The doubt that the national Vietnam Television (VTV) made money from the weather bulletin has been raised a few days ago.

In the recent days of cold weather, many parents had a hard time tracking the weather bulletin on VTV1 at 06:15 in the morning to know whether their children go to school or stay at home. According to the Ministry of Education and Training, if the temperature is less than 10 degrees Celsius, primary students are allowed to stay at home.

In several days, the VTV’s weather bulletin said that the temperature was less than 10°C, but some schools measured the temperature of above 10 degrees, causing difficulties for parents and students.

Many people questioned the accuracy of the national TV station’s weather forecast.

Talking about this, Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecast, told An Ninh Thu Do newspaper on January 14: "I would like to affirm that the temperature forecast on VTV at 06:15 is not from the sources of the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecast. We do not know about the sources of the information."

According to Hai, a lot of people called his center to complain about this.

"Here, we see self-interest. They should not let people get weather forecast information by sending service messages or making service phone calls," Hai said in the interview with An Ninh Thu Do.

There was a "misunderstanding" about VTV weather bulletin?

Shortly after Hai’s interview with An Ninh Thu Do, Ms. Thanh Thu, Head of the Weather Department of VTV, told VietNamNet that she was very surprised by the information published by some local newspapers that VTV made profit from the early morning weather report.

Thu said that the weather bulletin on VTV1 at 06:15 is taken from the short-term forecast of the National Hydrometeorology Forecast Center. “We have to get the information from that center because we cannot invent it ourselves," she added.

Thu said that the coordination of information between the Weather Department of VTV and the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecast is very specific and has been "smooth" for a long time.

Explaining about VTV’s text message services on weather information, Thu said that the purpose of this service is to provide an additional source of information to serve the people. She added that she did not know clearly about this service because it does not belong to her scope of work.

In her personal opinion, Thu said the most important function of her department is to report accurately and timely about the weather. A little temperature difference is unavoidable. It is the arrangement and decision of the education sector to allow primary students to stay at home on cold days or not.

On January 14 the VTV Department of Weather and the National Center of Hydrometeorology Forecast had a working session on the issue.

At the meeting, Hai admitted to make a slip of the tongue during the interview with An Ninh Thu Do. On the evening of the same day, Hai appeared on television to make correction about his statement.

"There were misunderstandings about the sources and interpretation of VTV when broadcasting technical bulletins during the day so it is possible to have the error when the weather bulletin was broadcasted at different time in the day," Hai said.

Thu, Head of the Weather Forecast Department of VTV further explained: "There are times due to special weather changes, affecting the lives of people such as rain storms, heat or cold spells, we also need special flash news. For example, in the recent cold spell, the information we published was the original data from the meteorological station of the National Center for Hydrometeorology Forecast that was not process to have the average results. Because to get the average results, we would have to wait until 7am while the program must be in time. Therefore, we provided original information for the reference of the people."
