National costume for Miss Universe 2022 pageant selected

"Ca Mau sedge mat" by a student of HCM City-based Ton Duc Thang University wins the design contest seeking a national costume for the Vietnamese contestant at Miss Universe 2022 pageant.

The costume, designed by Nguyen Quoc Viet, is inspired from the traditional sedge village in the southernmost province of Ca Mau. It highlights the cultural values and national identity of Vietnam.

The outfit was selected from 41 submissions of a design contest held for the Miss Universe 2022 pageant, which will take place later this year.

According to the organizers, submissions reflect the Vietnamese cultural identities and images of southern amateur music, Hoi An ancient town’s colors, Phong Nha caves, young volunteers, Vietnamese bamboo, and others.

The three best designs were selected, including Banh Trang (Rice paper), Tom Tre My Nghe (Handicraft bamboo shrimp) and Chieu Ca Mau (Ca Mau sedge mat) that met the requirements for aestheticism, uniqueness, and creativity. The first prize went to the design of "Ca Mau sedge mat".

Miss Universe Vietnam 2022 was kicked of this February after being halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The final will take place in HCM City on June 25.
