GSO chief Nguyen Bich Lam said the census, the first mid-decade one yet carried out, would cover about 1.1 million households, five per cent of the total nationwide.

The event falls between the census of 2009 and another to be held in 2019 and follows a decision approved in 2012 by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

About 13,000 census takers will be mobilised to carry out the work.

Lam said the task was aimed at collecting data to assess national policies on population and housing and the implementation of the socio-economic development plan for 2011-15.

Results of the census will be announced in October.

New ID cards

The General Statistics Office said it would soon start issuing new-model identity cards to Ha Noi citizens.

The new ID card will contain 12 digits instead of nine as in the past. It will also provide a national identification number for each citizen.

The move aims making it easier for people to fill in forms and to cut down on administrative expenses.

The Ministry of Public Security said that the new ID card would be difficult to fake because it was linked to 18 pieces of personal information, including blood type.

The country now has about 60 millions citizens meeting standards to get new ID cards.
