Hanoi Police on Friday announced that DNA test results on the body of a drowned woman found in the Duong River confirmed that she was Giap Thi Huyen Trang who was being hunted for the kidnapping and murder of a two-year-old girl in Gia Lam District.
According to police reports, Trang, 27, worked as a home help for a family at the Vinhomes Ocean Park development in Gia Lam District.
She came to pick up the 21-month-old girl from a kindergarten near the building at 3.30 pm on September 19 and took the baby to neighbouring Hung Yen Province on her motorbike.
Then Trang used different mobile phones to contact the baby's family and asked them to pay a ransom of VND1.50 billion (USD61,818) to get their baby back. The family had sent VND550 million to Trang.
The baby kept crying while with Trang and she killed the baby that afternoon. Then Trang also threw herself into the Duong River at 9.35 pm the same day after knowing that she was being hunted by the police.
On the morning of September 20, the baby's body was found in a fishpond owned by Nguyen Van Thanh, 69, in Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province, some 13 kilometres from her school.
Trang, who came from Bac Giang Province, had only worked for the baby's family for over a month before the incident happened.
