U23 Vietnam second at BTV Cup

Hosts Becamex Binh Duong successfully defended their Binh Duong Television (BTV) International Football (BTV) Cup's title after defeated U23 Vietnam 1-0 in a final match on November 3.

Nguyen Tang Tuan scored the only goal of the match against the national team at Go Dau Stadium to keep the Cup at home for the third time in a row.

The first half saw acting coach Phung Thanh Phuong’s national men play well, but Vu Minh Tuan, Van Thang and Ha Minh Tuan all missed scoring chances.

After the interval, hosts Binh Duong produced counterattacks with a pressing tactic, when U23 Vietnam no longer kept up their good spirit.

Their striker Abass tested goalie Nguyen Manh several times and failed to hammer in, but set up the ball for Tang Tuan to slot in.

Tuan was voted the best player of the match.

Binh Duong received a cash prize of VND450 million (US$21,000), while U23 Vietnam took home VND250,000.

Strong foreign teams to join int’l futsal tourney

World futsal defending champions Brazil will join the 2013 International Futsal Tournament, scheduled for Ho Chi Minh City from November 19-22.

Tran Anh Tu, Chairman of HCM City’s Football Federation, announced on October 31 that two other foreign teams – namely Japan and Thailand – will also take part in the event, which is considered a good chance for local players to hone their professional skills and gain more experience prior to the coming 27th SEA Games in Myanmar.

Brazil has recently claimed the championship title at the 2013 Futsal Grand Prix, while Japan and Thailand secured top and second place at the Asian futsal champs, respectively.

Competitors will play in a round robin format to select the best team who will receive a cash prize of US$5,000.

The organizing board will also present awards to the best player, the best goal-keeper, and the best striker.

Tickets cost VND50,000/match.

Vietnam wins wide range of paralympic swimming medals

Vietnam claimed a haul of one gold, one silver and one bronze after a strong showing from the swimmers at the Asian Youth Paralympic Games which ended in Malaysia on October 30.

Truong Quang Gon swam strongly to win the men's 100m backstroke S10 event with a time of 1min 22.83sec.

Duong Van Ngoc came second in the men's 100m breaststroke SB11 pool, while Vu Xuan Nhat came third in the men's 100m backstroke S12 category.

The Games is a multi-sport event for athletes with a disability aged 15-19.

Vietnam finished sixth in the medal tally, with 16 golds, four silvers and three bronze medals.

Japan topped the charts, followed by Iran and China.

Themed "Passion Grows, Dreams Fulfilled, Friendships Strengthened", these athletes competed across 14 different sports in Kuala Lumpur, from October 26-30.

Thousands of athletes represented the nearly 30 countries and territories that make up the Asian Paralympic Committee. The Games covered multi-disability categories including physical disabilities (wheelchair and amputees), visual impairment, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy and les autres (other disabilities).

Vi wins bronze medal at Wushu world championships

Viet Nam claimed only one bronze medal at the World Wushu Championships in Malaysia.

Duong Thuy Vi came in third in the women's changquan (long fist) event on 9.67 points, behind Guangmei Shen of China and Chinese Hong Kong's Geng Xiao Ling.

In the taolu (performance) division, the seven Vietnamese competing failed to add any medals to the nation's tally.

The sanda (combat) events will conclude on Wednesday.

VN to play Thailand at KL Super Series

Viet Nam overcame Indonesia 3-0 in the semi finals booking a place in the finals at the International Sepaktakraw Federation Super Series in Kuala Lumpur.

Viet Nam showed it's strength as a top team, dominating all three sets in the semi-final match.

World champions Thailand raced to a rapid 3-0 defeat of hosts Malaysia.

Viet Nam will face off with Thailand in the finals, while rivals Indonesia will be second runners up after beating Malaysia 2-0.

Nam seeded for Australian Open's junior qualifiers

Teenager Ly Hoang Nam's 95th position in the world junior ranking allowed him to play at January's Australian Open's youth qualification.

The Vietnamese jumped 47 places to enter the world top 100, which was released this week.

The result is due to his triumph at last week's ITF Chang-LTAT-Juniors Group 2 in Thailand.

Nam has made a plan of competing in a number of tournaments with a view to reach the 50th position which will give him a berth in the main round.

It is the first time Nam has reached the top 100. He is the second player after teammate Nguyen Hoang Thien last year to play at the first Grand Slam of the year.

U22s to play against Myanmar in Cambodia

The Vietnamese U22 team will play Myanmar U23s in the opening Group A match of the BIDC Cup this afternoon at Cambodia's Olympic Stadium.

An official draw held last week also bracketed Thailand in the same group, while Group B matched the hosts with Laos and Malaysia.

Under coach Dinh Van Dung, the team is expected to showcase its talent throughout the tournament and be ready to support the U23 team that will represent Viet Nam at the coming SEA Games.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, while the winners will walk away with US$20,000.

Viet Nam enter ISTAF Super Series semis

Beating Malaysia in both legs of the ISTAF Super Series' third round, Vietnamese sepak takraw team took the top place of the women's Group A and entered the semi-finals.

Yesterday Viet Nam won 2-1, the same result with the first leg on Thursday. They will play their next round against Indonesia who ranked second in the Group B, while Malaysia face Thailand.

In both the first and second rounds Viet Nam came in second.

Vietnamese swept out of world badminton championships

All Vietnamese players were ousted from the Badminton World Federation's World Junior Championships in Thailand.

In the men's singles events, Pham Cao Cuong lost 18-21, 16-21 to Fabian Roth from Germany. Pham Hoang Nam was beaten 11-21, 10-21 by Jun Peng Zhao of China. Do Duc Tuan was sent home after a 18-21, 16-21 defeat by Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man.

On the women's side, Nguyen Thuy Linh lost 16-21, 13-21 to Chinese Qin Jinjing. While Akane Yamaguchi from Japan defeated Dinh Thi Phuong Hong 21-19, 21-16.

Viet Nam's five pairs also suffered the same fate.

The world championships will continue until Sunday.

Dong Thap lead charge at shuttlecock contest

Dong Thap won the National Team Shuttlecock Championships 2013, which finished on Wednesday in Bac Giang, with two golds and one silver medal after six days of competition.

The second position went to hosts Bac Giang with one gold and two silvers, while Ha Noi was third with two bronze medals.

In the men's team category, Dong Thap took gold, Bac Giang claimed silver and bronze medals went to Ha Noi and HCM City.

In the women's team event, Bac Giang ranked first, followed by Dong Thap and Da Nang.

In team doubles, Dong Thap won their second gold, Bac Giang received silver while Ha Noi and Nghe An received bronze medals.

The annual tournament attracts nearly 100 athletes from eight cities and provinces across the country.
